The Organization of African Unity (OAU) was established on May 25, 1963, to promote unity and cooperation among African states. Togo and Morocco were among the founding members that signed the OAU Charter, which aimed to address issues of colonialism and promote economic development. The OAU later evolved into the African Union (AU) in 2001, continuing its mission for continental integration.
